The big one or SPS or "Are the endless in fact the possiblities?" rr... well whatever.. began with a find solidfied with a gift and executed with a struggle that we couldn't have enjoyed more or less.
We didn't know from the beggining how it would end up because we had, from the beggining, no idea what we were doing.

When we orignially concieved of the idea to give each one of the departments it's own conceptual / functional / beautiful piece of art, we became increasingly aware that we had no idea how to do that for SPS. This is because SPS stands for social and political sciences, which as far as humans are concerned covers well.. as one of our friends in the law department put it: "SPS is about every thing and nothing". Even after talking to SPS students, they really couldn't give us any direction. So we left it open and hoped the idea would come to fruition as we focused on the other 3 projects. We lived in fear for a while as none of the ideas we came up with really seemed all that great. All we knew we wanted to do something with mirrors as in our view anything social or political should begin with a personal reflection.

There were an indefinite number of attempts made at convincing each other about how best to express everything and nothing in an interactive framework that would be suitable for a bar. We had been getting more political and more abstract all the time in our discussions of the project and eventually we realized that most of our ideas were more of a task for politcians than for artists, and we decided to retreat into the world of shapes and designs.

The final idea came to us while we were celebrating nothing on the beach, waiting for someone to pick us up and bring us to Lyyli's secluded summer house on the top of the Ligurian hills. In order to protect us from the wind, we were sitting in an empty building under construction on the border of the water, no furniture had yet been installed, so we sat on some rocks and started to think about the common SPS dilemma: how can we represent something that is about nothing and everything..

Maybe it was the discomfort of the rocks we were sitting upon, or maybe it was the animosity generated by our current debate over the meaning of SPS, probably it was because I was holding a chair frame in my hand that I had intended to make for lyyli's father for a birthday gift but suddenly the idea was here, and it was a beautiful one. If we couldn't come up with something that would represent everything and nothing, maybe we should not even try to do it. Instead, let us outsource the task to the actual SPS researchers, by providing them with a proper framework for creation. " What qualifies as an argument amongst two people, will be regarded as a debate if we involve more people "

So we decided to create a "corner for debates", or, in other words, a little lounge made up of a number of chairs that would represent different political views, on which people could sit and argue over everything and nothing. We decided that the center piece of the lounge would be a table that would implement an infinity-mirror on the inside, i.e. a table whose cover is made of two-way mirrors so that it would give the impression that it has been positioned over a tunnel that leads down into the infinity. The possiblities for discussion are endless. Of course, the real intention was mainly to transform the Fiasco into a more interesting place by providing a small lounge where PhD researchers could sit and discuss their research, or perhaps just talk about the weather or the best italian food they have had so far.
